A Former Second-Rounder With Bloodlines and a Bat Still Finding Its Level.
Matthew Lugo arrived in the Angels system as a former Boston second-round pick (2019) with real pedigree — he is the nephew of Carlos Beltrán, and he carried genuine prospect helium as a shortstop before a move to the outfield. The athleticism and the raw power have always been there. The hit tool is the part still catching up.
For the Angels, he is left-field depth behind Josh Lowe and Jo Adell — another bat in the outfield mix who can step in when injuries open a spot. He is young enough (24) that there is still developmental upside here, which separates him from a pure org-depth veteran. If the contact improves, the power could make him more than a fill-in.
The tools have never been the question. The strike zone has. Lugo is the kind of former prospect a rebuilding team is right to stash and find out about — the cost is low and the ceiling is still open.
