A First-Round Slider Still Looking for a Healthy Runway.
Sam Bachman was the ninth overall pick in 2021 on the strength of one of the best sliders in that draft class — a true plus-plus offering paired with mid-to-upper-90s velocity. The profile screamed high-leverage reliever from the start, and when healthy, he has flashed exactly that. He is on the 40-man roster, which gives him a real leg up in the bullpen competition.
The recurring obstacle has been health. Bachman has never strung together a full, clean season, and the innings totals tell the story — short bursts of dominance interrupted by trips to the IL. The stuff has never been the question. Availability has.
The slider alone is a major league out pitch. If Bachman can stay on the mound for a full season, the Angels have a leverage arm. That "if" has defined his career so far.
