A Holdover With Just Enough Track Record to Matter.

José Fermín is one of only two relievers carried over from last season's bullpen — the other being Ryan Zeferjahn. That continuity is worth something on a unit that was largely torn down and rebuilt, but neither holdover has a guaranteed spot. Fermín has to earn his innings the same way everyone else does.

The 4.46 ERA across 34.1 innings in 2025 is a modest but real body of work — just enough of a track record to give him an edge over arms with none. On a bullpen this unsettled, a reliever who has shown he can absorb middle-relief innings without falling apart has a path to a spot. The question is whether the younger, higher-ceiling options pass him on the depth chart.

Continuity is the case for Fermín. Ceiling is the case against him. On a bullpen still searching for an identity, a known, serviceable arm has value — but it is the first one bumped when a prospect forces the issue.
